Overview
The World Bank estimates that the effects of natural hazards in Morocco cost on average over US$ 575 million annually and pose significant threats to Moroccans and their livelihoods.
Against this background, Morocco has improved its institutional, policy, and investment framework for disaster risk management through numerous initiatives, as evidenced by the recent adoption of the National Strategy for Natural Disaster Risk Management in February 2021 led by the Ministry of the Interior. These efforts carried out by Morocco at the national level as well as locally in cities, which are particularly affected by these hazards.
The city of Fez demonstrates a strong commitment in this regard, with the adoption of its Resilience Strategy which identifies key actions aimed at reducing the vulnerability of citizens and strengthening the resilience of the city's institutions and services. The strategy offers a holistic and integrated approach to addressing the social, economic, physical, and environmental issues that contribute to the vulnerability to disasters.
This strategy was prepared under the leadership of the city of Fez with the guidance of the Ministry of Interior. It benefited from the support of the World Bank and the Global Fund for Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), as well as financial support from the Japan-World Bank program for mainstreaming disaster risk management in developing countries.
Objectives
The objective of the dissemination workshop is to present the main recommendations and conclusions of the Fez resilience strategy, which was developed based on an inclusive approach that mobilizes a plurality of actors, citizens, businesses, universities, and ministries, and outlines a roadmap to a safer, greener, and more resilient city of Fez.

Registration for the Validation Workshop of the Practical Guide to Urban Resilience
Following the Fez Strategy dissemination workshop, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the virtual workshop for the validation of the Practical Guide to Urban Resilience for Moroccan Municipalities, to be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Rabat time).
Building on lessons learned from experience in developing urban resilience strategies for the cities of Fez and Mohammedia/Ain Harrouda, this Guide will help Moroccan municipalities design strategies and action plans that are effective and adaptable to the specificities of their local urban contexts.
