Applications: Can be applied anytime when governments need help in improving their (draft) building codes. Increasing task team interests is to assess the quality of building codes when a building code is being considered for a DPL prior action. More traditional approach is to assess building codes as part of project preparation (or early IPF implementation phase) and identify appropriate finalization approach and amounts of efforts/budgets need to be diverted during the World Bank financed projects (IPF).
Data requirement: Access to building code document(s)
Final deliverables: A presentation summarizing the findings related to coverage of major topics (against global good practices), quality of code provisions, integration of hazards into design parameters and usability and accessibility for local building design and construction practitioners. Finding presentation will have summary slides, followed by detailed findings with targeted provisions and comments.
Geographic scope: National, (sub-national, state)
Hazards covered: Seismic and wind events mainly
Indicative Cost / working time: $50-120k
Methodology peer-reviewed, cleared (date)?: Yes as follows, with a pending finalization of universal accessibility in FY25:
a) structural resilience

Building code review is a technical review of existing building codes or draft building codes with an aim to help governments in improving quality and clarify of code provisions. The building code review will be done using the GFDRR's building code review checklists, developed based on comparative analysis of global good practices, and has 4 modules: a) structural resilience; b) fire safety; c) green buildings; and d) unviersal accessibility. The review can be done on any of these areas or all of these areas. Cost and time required will be changed depending on the review scope.
