Hanna Riyanto is an architect passionate about resilience in post disaster housings and humanitarian architecture. Through her experience in villages in northern Sumatera, Indonesia she has focused her practice on how to create culturally sensitive spaces in post-disaster environments. Noticing how the villagers in Sumatera added makeshift structures to the housing provided to them by the government after the eruption of the Sinabung Volcano in order to fulfil their spatial needs, she began to wonder how to embed local involvement into the process of designing relocation houses directly following a disaster. Hallmarks of her solution consist of tangible, packable, and small scale models and “decision trees” that can all utilized as if they were gameboard pieces on a map. With this object-heavy approach, language barriers to understanding what a local may need from their new living space can be overcome. Of her work she states:
I aim to minimize vulnerability by providing a guide on how to create culturally aware spaces that can be applied within existing shelters or reconstruction of post-disaster housings while enabling the participation of the refugees in the process. This method is delivered in a form of a ‘Resilience Kit’ that consists of a resilience diagram and a decision tree that acts as a guide on how to design a culturally aware space. It also comes with a set of shiftable models that refugees can use as a communication tool to express their spatial needs. The kit is made into a flatpack package that can be delivered to the site of disaster or refugee camps where the NGO’s or spatial designers can get insights on the refugees’ spatial needs and make decisions on how the reconstruction of a post disaster should be.
