Displaced
2019
Oil and charcoal on plywood
30 x 40 cm
This piece draws inspiration from real-life photographs of migrants, refugees, and displaced persons. Using collage and paper-cutting techniques, the artist sought to draw an emotional analogy. Just as these images rely on individual pieces being cut and replaced in new locations, so too are the individuals being forced into displacement. Those forced into displacement due to social or environmental factors are all too easily cut out – like paper dolls – from their original surroundings and reattached to locations often unrecognizable and inhumane.
