What Happened to the Aral Sea?
2019
Watercolor
2.91 x 4.2 cm
Adilova is a young journalist/activist working to call attention to environmental catastrophe. This painting is a provocative depiction of the disappearance of the Aral Sea. Ever since the 1960’s, the Aral Sea – located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan – has been shrinking. By 2014, the eastern basin of the Aral Sea had completely dried up. Called one of the “planet’s worst environmental disasters” all archival materials about this occurrence have now been added to UNESCOs Memory of the World Register to encourage further research into understanding this tragedy.
