40 Days After the Storm (a project in response to Hurricane Harvey)
2017-2018
40 dye sublimation prints on aluminum panels
12 x 18 in. panels
This piece is a gridded installation that chronicles the days following Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall in Texas and Louisiana in August of 2017. For forty days, the artist collected samples from the flood site (debris from homes, dead insects, fallen branches, etc.) and placed each item in its own homemade pinhole camera. Placing each pinhole camera outside for the duration of the collecting time, the extended exposure to the sun and the natural elements created images that seemed to be layered shadowy objects, obscured by water marks, and floating in space. These small seemingly insignificant objects collectively became part of a larger picture – a reference to how the ordinary day-to-day experience can be interrupted and totally transformed by an epic event such as a flood or disaster.
