The Tempestry Project is a collective of fiber artists, knitters, cross-stitchers, and weavers. Begun as a small group in the United States, the collective is now inclusive of artists from France and Mexico. This collective seeks to use visualize temperate change data in the form of tapestries. Thus was born “tempestries”. The process of creating these tempestries is crucial to the artwork itself. By channeling climate change into small pieces – each piece of Whidbey Island NAS representing high temperatures for a particular year in a particular place – The Tempestry Project has created a space for the observation of climate change in a less overwhelming way. Using the craft of stitching, the collective seeks to bring the seemingly impossible challenge climate change to a more manageable, intimate, and personal level.
