The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and the City Resilience Program (CRP) are pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with the Gates Foundation. This collaboration aims to address the growing climate risks faced by vulnerable urban communities worldwide.

Uniting CRP’s expertise in urban resilience with the Gates Foundation’s dedication to advancing global public goods, this partnership seeks to accelerate practical solutions that empower cities to adapt to climate change while safeguarding their most at-risk populations.

Over the next two years, the partnership will focus on three critical areas to enhance urban resilience:

  1. Scaling proven solutions: Expanding successful approaches to strengthen urban climate resilience, ensuring that cities have the tools to prepare for and respond to climate risks effectively.
  2. Empowering vulnerable communities: Driving the integration of urban risk and resilience data into urban planning, financing, and governance to protect the most affected populations.
  3. Innovating data-driven approaches: Developing new tools and methodologies to enable cities to make informed, evidence-based decisions for sustainable and climate-resilient development.

With climate change intensifying the frequency and severity of natural hazards, cities around the world are at the forefront of the battle against its impacts. Urban populations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, are disproportionately affected by these risks. This partnership aims to equip cities with the resources, expertise, and innovative tools they need to build more resilient futures.

By leveraging the unique strengths of each partner, the collaboration will deliver solutions that enhance resilience and protect those most in need.
