Event Summary
Registration is now open for the 2019 Understanding Risk (UR) Caribbean Conference!
Slated for May 27 – June 1 in Barbados, UR Caribbean will bring together representatives of government ministries and national disaster management agencies, disaster risk management practitioners, urban planners, insurance industry stakeholders, private sector organizations, academia, multilateral development banks, regional partners and donors to:
- Identify gaps and needs that exist in disaster risk information
- Obtain in-depth training in areas such as fiscal resilience, coastal protection, risk analytics & more
- Share knowledge and best practices from analyses, studies, projects and business practices
- Experience innovations from global partners that can facilitate disaster risk management processes
UR Caribbean is organized by the World Bank’s Caribbean Disaster Risk Management team, in partnership with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the European Union (EU), and will be hosted by the Government of Barbados.

Registration is open and free, but interested persons must register in order to attend.
Venue
UR Caribbean will be held at the University of the West Indies – Cave Hill Campus’ Errol Barrow Center for Creative Imagination.
Hotels
Official UR Caribbean Conference hotels will be available shortly. Please note that shuttles will run to and from these hotels only. Both hotels are located on the island’s South Coast – one of the main tourist hubs which provides easy access to beautiful beaches, as well as a plethora of restaurants and activities.
More logistical information will be provided closer to the start of the conference.

What is Understanding Risk?
UR is a global community of 8,000+ experts and practitioners active in the creation, communication, and use of disaster risk information. Members share knowledge and experience, collaborate, and discuss innovations and best practice in risk assessment. The community convenes every two years at UR Forums – five-day events that highlight groundbreaking work, facilitate nontraditional partnerships, and showcase new technical know-how in disaster risk identification. Past global forums were held in London, Cape Town, Venice, Washington D.C. and Mexico City. In the interim, regional conferences are also held to galvanize localized efforts and build regional capacity in the area of disaster risk assessment. Regional events in 2018 were held in the Balkans and the Pacific Islands.
