Welcome to the 9th CG Meeting of the GFDRR!
We are pleased to welcome you to the 9th Consultative Group (CG) meetings of the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) hosted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Bank, and in close collaboration with Inter American Development Bank (IaDB) in Washington DC.
These meetings seek to provide an opportunity for increased cooperation among key stakeholders to further intensify efforts towards mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in priority countries. In our ongoing efforts to broaden the GFDRR partnership with developing countries and per decision of the 7th CG in Stockholm, Sweden last year, Governments of Bangladesh, Malawi and Yemen have been invited to join the GFDRR Consultative Group as members, and they will participating in the October meetings in Washington, DC. Some of the key highlights in October CG meetings are; presentation of the findings of the economics of disaster risk reduction study, increasing harmonization and collaboration among the key mechanisms in disaster risk reduction, building strong partnership and in-country cooperation among the International Financial Institutions (IFIs), making relevant expertise available to the disaster-prone priority countries to meet their DRR and Recovery capacity needs, harnessing full potential of Post-Disaster Needs Assessments for longer term Disaster Risk Reduction, and a more organized and effective donor coordination in priority countries.

International Financial Institutions’ (IFIs) Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction
This session will follow up on the conclusions of the Multilateral Development Banks Roundtable Discussions at the last CG in Kyoto in May 2010 and discuss progress made since. With an increased number of participants from Bilateral and Multilateral Financial Institutions this event will provide a useful platform to elevate the Disaster Risk Reduction agenda in the development dialogue and towards enhancing collaboration on DRR work. Hosted by Inter- American Development Bank (IaDB) and The World Bank.

Partnering on Global Knowledge - Innovative Products and Networks for Risk Reduction Solutions
There has been a rapidly growing demand from disaster-prone developing countries, particularly GFDRR priority countries for better access to global expertise and good practices to meet knowledge and capacity deficit in disaster risk reduction, post-disaster needs assessment, disaster recovery and reconstruction planning. This session will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences from GFDRR’s recent knowledge initiatives (e.g. safe housing handbook, Understanding Risk, global expert teams for PDNAs, etc.) and to discuss a roadmap for strengthening knowledge networks and scaling up innovative knowledge tools to respond to the increasing demand. A large number of DRM experts from Donor and partner countries, regional and international organizations, public and private sector will share their experiences and best practices and explore new knowledge based partnerships, effective dissemination of knowledge products, tap into formal and informal networks of experts to raise the overall level of technical excellence in DRM.

Dinner Roundtable on Disaster Risk Financing in Developing countries: Role of Development Partners
The objective of the session is to discuss opportunities and challenges in the financial protection of developing countries as an integral element of disaster risk reduction against natural disasters. Based on the recent and ongoing initiatives, this session will discuss the role of the development partners in helping disaster-prone countries build their resilience against natural disasters. The session will also present an update on the ongoing work on feasibility of Pan Africa Drought Risk Pool.

EC-UN-WB Global Dialogue on Post Disaster Recovery and Reconstruction Planning
This session will bring together experiences and lessons learned from various post-disaster recovery needs assessments and planning exercises carried out for major disasters around the world in the past few years. The event has been designed as an intensive learning exercise, in line with GFDRR’s ongoing efforts to bring about improvements to the existing tools, forums and mechanisms for disaster recovery assessments and planning. Agricultural insurance in developing countries: A Presentation on the Brazilian experience [Brief]
This session will present a review of the current status of the agricultural insurance market, with a particular focus on developing countries. It will identify challenges and opportunities to develop agricultural insurance in developing countries, in the light of the Brazilian experience and other selected countries. Finally, it will discuss the role of the donor partners in promoting agricultural insurance as a means to increase the financial resilience of the farming communities against natural disasters.
